Aircraft Technical Services providers ensure that the aircraft asset value is maintained for leasing companies and all required maintenance is completed according to regulation defined by the state. These include the initial and continued airworthiness of aircraft and any modifications during its life cycle. These tasks must be documented, technical records are a large value of the aircraft asset up and including to its final scrapping. This course is designed to upskill experienced aircraft maintenance personnel, providing them with knowledge of the required Technical Records, Initial and Continued Airworthiness Management to enable them to enter new roles within the aviation industry as Aircraft Technical Representatives.

Skills shortages in Aircraft Technical Services and training solutions have been identified in partnership with the Regional Skills Forum and industry partners AerCap, Nordic Aviation Capital, Shannon Technical Services, Eirtech Aviation and CAE Parc Aviation, a major aviation recruitment agency and provider of engineering and technical support services to the aviation industry based in Shannon. The team are in regular contact with the regional skills forum manager as the aviation sector is seen as a strategic priority for the region. These companies are actively engaged providing instructors, placing employees on the courses, as well as recruiting graduates regularly. These partners are part of the International Aviation Services Cluster which makes up of about seventy-five aerospace and aviation companies in the region.

As context, Aircraft leasing is centred on complex financial details, it involves the ownership and operation of physical aircraft. These aircraft move between lessors and airlines on a regular basis. All maintenance and exchanges require material checks and administrative tasks. Irish lessors manage €80bn in assets worldwide and there are more than 250 companies involved in the aerospace, aviation and space sectors in Ireland, providing employment for around 42,000 full-time workers. Annually, up to 100 aircraft are transitioned at Shannon, generating an estimated €30 million worth of business to aircraft technical service providers in this field every year. This has increased due to the volume of aircraft being transitioned because of the Covid19 Pandemic. Locally the Shannon Cluster is a rich pool of students. Nationally, there are 2600 highly skilled jobs directly related to the MRO sector (Maintenance Overhaul Repair) in Ireland. These experienced personnel are ideal candidates for this course as they possess the technical knowledge and experience required for these roles but require key knowledge, which this course provides. Each year there are are 50-70 applications for 35 places showing strong demand.

Identified during ongoing discussions and input over a number of years with industry partner companies CAE Parc Aviation, AerCap, Eirtech Aviation, Shannon Technical Services and others. The growing technical services personnel requirements of these companies have highlighted the skills gaps. This has led to the target cohort of aircraft maintenance personnel and individuals with an aviation related background being identified. Graduates from other third level courses are targets as this course provides them with an opportunity to enter the industry.


What are the entry requirements?

1. Applicants are required to hold an aircraft maintenance qualification or aviation qualification at Level 6 or above or with relevant industry experience.

3. Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) / Special Case Registrations: Prospective participants who do not meet the entry requirements for the programme detailed above, but who may qualify for admission by meeting certain other equivalent criteria, should apply to the Flexible Learning Office for consideration. Please email stating name of course to request a RPL form.ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a minimum score of 5.5 in an IELTS exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a minimum of 6.0 is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

EXAMS: Assessment is 100% continuous assessment.

FEES: The overall fee for this programme is €2,550. Applicants in employment will qualify for 90% Springboard+ funding and the 10% fee to be paid will be €255. Please note that this 10% fee is non-refundable and must be paid in full before you commence your programme of study. Applicants on a qualifying DEASP payment will qualify for 100% funding.

This course will be Springboard funded for 22-23 academic year only. Applicants must complete this programme within this academic year. It is not possible to defer your place to the following academic year as we cannot guarantee that this course will run or be funded again. What modules will I study?

Module 1: Part 21 Design
The aim of this module is give a fundamental knowledge of Initial airworthiness legislation and how it impacts aircraft design and design changes. It will introduce the student to the theory and practice of Initial Airworthiness, providing a detailed knowledge of the development process for major and minor aircraft modification and repairs.

Module 2: Continued Airworthiness Management Organisation
The aim of this module is to provide an opportunity to students to develop a detailed knowledge of the range of responsibilities of a CAMO department and Maintenance Planning Group, which include the delivery of the aircraft maintenance work package to ensure the aircraft remains fully compliant with the Maintenance Program. On successful completion of this module the student will be capable of completing a Lease Transition CAMO project which includes Induction, Management and Delivery.

Module 3: Aircraft Records
The aim of this module is to provide an opportunity for students to develop a detailed knowledge of the aircraft technical documentation required during the aircraft lease transition process. They will be able to devise a structure, plan and accomplish the Lease Transition checklist requirements, ensuring no documentation gaps within the aircraft’s history. They will be able to evaluate, report and provide feedback during the process, working with the Lessor and Lessee to manage expectations and achieve a successful redelivery of all required documentation.

Classes will take place one evening per week from 6pm to 9pm over one aceademic year September to June This programme will be delivered in a blended format ie. a mix of 60% online and 40% classroom sessions.
Classes will take place in Atlantic Air Adventure Aviation Centre in Shannon Town, Co.Clare

What will the time commitment be?

Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.  The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.


This programme will be assessed through 100% continuous assessment.
